Transatlantic Radicals and the Early American Republic

Transatlantic Radicals and the Early American Republic
In the transatlantic world of the late eighteenth century, easterly winds blew radical thought to America. Thomas Paine had already arrived on these shores in 1774 federalist view and made his mark as a radical pamphleteer during the Revolution. In his wake followed more than 200 other radical exiles -- English Dissenters, Whigs, federalist view and Painites; Scottish lads o`parts ; federalist view and Irish patriots -- who became influential newspaper writers federalist view and editors federalist view and helped change the nature of political discourse in a young nation. Michael Durey has written the first full-scale analysis of these radicals, evaluating the long-term influence their ideas have had on American political thought. Transatlantic Radicals uncovers the roots of their radicalism in the Old World federalist view and tells the story of how these men came to be exiled, how they emigrated, federalist view and how they participated in the politics of their adopted country. Nearly all of these radicals looked to Paine as their spiritual leader federalist view and to Thomas Jefferson as their political champion. They held egalitarian, anti-federalist values federalist view and promoted an extreme form of participatory democracy that found a niche in the radical wing of Jefferson`s Republican Party. Their divided views on slavery, however, reveal that democratic republicanism was unable to cope with the realities of that institution. As political activists during the 1790s, they proved crucial to Jefferson`s 1800 presidential victory; then, after his views moderated federalist view and their influence waned, many repatriated, others drifted into anonymity, federalist view and a few managed to find success in the New World. Although many of these men are known to us through other histories, their influence as a group has never before been soclosely examined. Durey persuasively demonstrates that the intellectual ferment in Britain did indeed have tremendous influence on American politics. His account of that influence sheds considerable light on transatlantic political history federalist view and differences in religious, political, federalist view and economic fre

Negotiating the Constitution

Negotiating the Constitution
Joseph M. Lynch argues that the Constitution was a product of political struggles involving regional interests, economic concerns, federalist view and ideology. The framers, he maintains, settled on enigmatic wording of the Necessary federalist view and Proper Clause federalist view and of the General Welfare provision in the Spending Clause as a compromise, leaving the extent of federal power to be determined by the political process. During ratification, however, attempts by dissident framers to undo the compromise were repelled in The Federalist: charges of overly broad congressional powers were met with protestations that in fact these powers were limited. Lynch describes how early lawmakers applied the Constitution to such issues as executive power federalist view and privilege, the deportation of aliens, federalist view and the prohibition of seditious speech. He follows the disputes over the interpretation of this document -- focusing on James Madison`s changing views -- as the new government took shape federalist view and political parties were formed. Lynch points out that the first six Congresses federalist view and President George Washington disregarded the framers` intentions when they were deemed impractical to follow. In contrast, he warns that the version of original intent put forth in recent Supreme Court opinions regarding congressional power could hinder Congress in serving the nation.
